Rocket Attack Targets Mayor In Southern Philippines

An assassination attempt targeted Shariff Aguak Mayor Akmad Ampatuan in Maguindanao del Sur province in the southern Philippines. Unidentified attackers fired a rocket launcher at the mayor’s convoy, but Ampatuan escaped unharmed, while two of his bodyguards were injured. Authorities said three suspects were killed and four others detained during a joint police and military operation. The mayor’s office confirmed he was inside a bulletproof vehicle at the time of the attack and is safe.
