Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei approved the pardon or sentence reduction of 2,108 prisoners to mark the 47th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution. The proposal was submitted by Iran’s judiciary chief and includes the full release of 919 prisoners, provided they have no other convictions.
The remaining inmates will receive reduced sentences or have their penalties converted into fines, according to judicial officials. In Iran, such amnesties are traditionally granted on major national and religious occasions, while those convicted of serious security offenses are typically excluded.
