The United States transported a small nuclear reactor from California to Hill Air Force Base in Utah using a C-17 cargo plane, marking the first such air transfer in the country. The Ward microreactor, built by California-based Valar Atomics, was shipped without nuclear fuel.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the move shows nuclear energy can be deployed “where and when it is needed,” while Defense official Michael Duffey called it a strategic advantage. The reactor can generate up to 5 megawatts of electricity, enough to power about 5,000 homes, according to the company.
