Iran and Russia began a joint naval exercise, “Maritime Security Belt 2026,” in the Gulf of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean. The drill includes Iranian Alvand-class frigates, missile ships, helicopters and special forces, alongside Russian naval and air elements.
According to Iranian media, the exercise featured a scenario to rescue a hijacked commercial ship, involving coordinated air and sea boarding operations. Officials said the drill aims to enhance maritime security and joint operational readiness.
“The joint naval exercises between Russia and Iran were not related to the increased US-led tensions in the Middle East,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. “These are planned exercises and were agreed upon in advance.”
