The Grand Mosque and the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, are witnessing the largest Ramadan Umrah pilgrimage in history. More than 11 million Muslims have visited the Kaaba so far this Ramadan, with the courtyard around the shrine filled to capacity, according to officials.
Saudi authorities said the surge follows the quota system applied during Hajj, making the year 1447 AH (Hijri calendar) the busiest Ramadan Umrah season on record. The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah is also evaluating a possible increase in Hajj quotas, currently set at 0.1% per country, with discussions underway to raise them to 1.5% and potentially 2%.
Demand remains high worldwide. Around 1.8 million people in Türkiye and more than 3 million in Indonesia and Malaysia are reportedly waiting to perform Hajj.
