German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing during his first official visit since taking office in May 2025. Merz was welcomed by Prime Minister Li Qiang, and five agreements were signed, including in the economic and trade sectors.
Merz said he aims to deepen Germany’s “comprehensive strategic partnership” with China and revive high-level intergovernmental consultations. Xi emphasized strengthening mutual trust and strategic communication amid global uncertainty.
