Australia Cuts Fuel Tax Amid Crisis

Speaking from Canberra, Australia, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a three-month, 26-cent cut to the fuel tax to combat the historic surge in global oil prices sparked by the Middle East conflict. Addressing the nation, he acknowledged the financial strain on everyday citizens, noting that while Australia is an “optimistic nation,” the severe economic shocks caused by the war “will be with us for months.” Albanese outlined a new national fuel security plan to stabilize domestic supply and urged the public to avoid panic buying, asking motorists to simply “fill up as you normally do” and utilize public transit. Warning that the coming months will not be easy, he assured Australians that they will tackle these unprecedented global challenges “the Australian way” by working together and supporting one another.
