Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Taiwanese opposition leader Cheng Li-wun in Beijing, marking the first high-level contact between the two political parties in a decade. During the talks at the Great Hall of the People, Xi reiterated Beijing’s push for peaceful reunification under the “one China” principle, warning that Taiwanese independence efforts will absolutely not be tolerated. In response, the Kuomintang (KMT) leader advocated for reciprocal dialogue and sustainable cooperation, stressing that the Taiwan Strait must not become a chessboard for external interference. This rare diplomatic mission aims to ease soaring regional tensions, despite Beijing’s continued refusal to engage directly with Taiwan’s democratically elected ruling government.
