EU Launches Anonymous Age Verification App

The European Union Commission has introduced a new, anonymous age verification app designed to protect children from online risks without compromising user privacy. After a one-time verification using an official ID, the open-source application will seamlessly confirm to social media and age-restricted sites whether a user meets age requirements without sharing personal data. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that this free, untraceable system eliminates any excuses for online platforms failing to safeguard minors. Several member states, including France, Italy, and Spain, plan to integrate the tool into their national digital wallets shortly. Officials note the application will strengthen enforcement of the Digital Services Act, paving the way for strict sanctions against platforms that prioritize commercial interests over online safety.
