Evacuations are underway for the Dutch-flagged MV Hondius, currently docked in Spain’s Canary Islands following a hantavirus outbreak that has claimed three lives. Authorities are carefully disembarking the 140 international passengers in staggered groups, transferring them directly to secure flights for immediate quarantine in their home countries. The international health alert heightened today after French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu confirmed that one evacuated passenger returning to Paris is already exhibiting symptoms of the virus. While passengers face mandatory medical observation upon arrival, the ship’s 30 crew members will remain on board to sail the isolated vessel back to the Netherlands.
