Belgian Teachers Blockade Schools Over Controversial Reforms

Teachers in French-speaking Belgium have escalated their ongoing strike against a sweeping education reform package by barricading school entrances to prevent staff from entering. The proposed legislation, set for a parliamentary vote on May 27, includes controversial measures such as cutting teaching positions, eliminating hot school meals, and restricting retirement benefits. Consequently, numerous schools across the Walloon region have shut down just as critical exams approach, causing significant disruption to the academic calendar. While parents generally support the educators’ demands, they remain deeply concerned about the negative impact on their children’s education. Despite mounting pressure and union demands to withdraw the austerity plan, the Francophone Ministry of Education remains determined to push the reforms forward.
