As Muslims gather in the holy city for the Hajj pilgrimage, worshippers are flocking to the historic Jannatul Mualla Cemetery to honor the family and companions of the Prophet Muhammad. The sacred site, which includes the resting place of the Prophet’s first wife, Khadijah, draws a diverse and colorful array of pilgrims from across the globe. Due to local entry restrictions, female and elderly worshippers actively participate by offering heartfelt prayers from the adjacent roadway or passing buses. Today, visitors offer their respects at completely unmarked graves, as the cemetery’s prominent Ottoman-era tombs and nameplates have been removed over time.
