Five Nations Secure UN Security Council Seats

The UN General Assembly has elected Kyrgyzstan, Austria, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe as the newest non-permanent members of the Security Council for the 2027-2028 term. In a notable upset, Portugal and Austria secured the two available Western European seats, shutting out Germany despite Berlin’s intense diplomatic campaign. Meanwhile, Kyrgyzstan claimed the highly contested Asia-Pacific seat by overcoming the Philippines in a decisive third-round vote. Starting January 1, 2027, these five nations will join the UN’s most powerful body, helping to shape legally binding global decisions on international security, peacekeeping, and sanctions.
