Türkiye’s New Yellow-Fleshed Watermelon Debuts for Harvest

Following a three-year research and development process, farmers in Adana, Türkiye, have begun harvesting the “Tropical Sunshine” watermelon, a unique variety featuring a dark green rind and bright yellow flesh. Traditionally found in tropical zones like Thailand and India, the crop is now being cultivated locally due to changing climate patterns. The yellow fruit gets its distinct color from beta-carotene instead of lycopene, and it yields up to seven tons per acre compared to the four to five tons produced by standard red watermelons. With 300 acres currently planted nationwide, agricultural officials expect the high-yielding, premium crop to command nearly double the price of traditional watermelons due to strong market curiosity.
