State Funeral Held for Iran’s Slain Supreme Leader Khamenei

A massive state funeral has commenced in Tehran for Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US strike in February, following months of delays caused by ongoing regional conflict. The extensive, multi-day procession, which notably coincides with the United States’ 250th Independence Day celebrations, will travel through several cities in Iran and Iraq before concluding with a July 9 burial in Mashhad. Representatives from approximately 100 countries are attending the solemn ceremonies, which also featured the first public appearance in months by the newly appointed Revolutionary Guards Commander, Ahmed Vahidi. Representing Türkiye at the proceedings, Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to offer his condolences, emphasizing that Türkiye shares the “pain experienced by the brotherly Iranian people” Iranand will actively “contribute to efforts to establish lasting peace and stability in our region.”
