French President Emmanuel Macron has arrived in Damascus, becoming the first European Union leader to visit Syria since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Greeted by Syrian Foreign Minister Asad Sheibani, Macron is scheduled to hold comprehensive roundtable talks with Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara to discuss bilateral cooperation and the country’s ongoing reconstruction. Highlighting the diplomatic significance of the trip, Macron stated on social media, “We are here for a sovereign Syria, one that preserves its unity in its diversity and lives in peace with its neighbors.” Accompanied by prominent French business leaders, including the CEOs of TotalEnergies and CMA CGM, the historic visit aims to “open a new chapter in the name of stability and peace.”
