Raging wildfires across Ontario have reduced approximately 735,000 hectares (7,350 square kilometers) to ashes, with 190 active blazes currently burning through the province. Despite aggressive firefighting operations, flames continue to spread—most notably north of Thunder Bay, where the largest blaze has scorched over 318,000 hectares. Ontario Premier Doug Ford confirmed that roughly 1,800 residents have been evacuated, asserting, “We will not spare a penny fighting these fires and keeping people safe.” Massive plumes of smoke recently pushed Toronto to the top of global air pollution rankings before drifting south into the United States. While air quality in the U.S. Northeast has since shown signs of improvement, atmospheric conditions remain unhealthy across parts of the American Midwest.
