Mass Evacuations as Wildfires Ravage France

A rapidly spreading wildfire in France’s Gironde region has forced the total evacuation of the popular Cap-Ferret peninsula, with hundreds fleeing by boat as the blaze consumed over 10,000 hectares. Describing the crisis as “very intense,” President Emmanuel Macron requested urgent European Union assistance, securing incoming firefighting aircraft from multiple nations. The devastation extends beyond Gironde, with a separate blaze near Biscarrosse in the Landes region forcing over 23,000 residents and tourists to abandon their homes and campsites. Highlighting the severe scale of the destruction, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed 32 fires remain active and stated, “To date, the amount of land burned across France since the beginning of the year has exceeded 50,000 hectares.”
