Nepal Flood Death Toll Tops 788

The death toll from catastrophic flash floods triggered by a collapsed Himalayan glacier has surged to 788 in Nepal, with over 2,500 people still missing. The August 26 disaster along the Bhotekoshi River has also devastated neighboring China, where authorities report 16 fatalities and 546 missing individuals. While a temporary lake created by the deluge has largely drained, Chinese officials warn that a massive crater upstream holding 1.4 million cubic meters of water “still poses a risk.” Authorities stress that the precarious site needs to be “closely monitored” as desperate search and recovery missions continue across the border region.
