Putin Urges Swift Decision on Armenia’s EU Bid

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met at the SCO Summit in Bishkek to address Yerevan’s growing ambitions to join the European Union. While Putin acknowledged that pursuing EU membership is Armenia’s legitimate right, he warned that the shift could complicate its current standing in the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union. Urging Yerevan to quickly clarify its geopolitical path, Putin stated, “We will respect any choice the Armenian people make, but in light of these potential decisions, we need to readjust our trade and economic policies.” Emphasizing the urgency to redefine their strained bilateral ties, the Russian leader pressed Pashinyan to act fast, adding, “The sooner the decision, the better.”
