Thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets in Paris and across France to condemn a controversial new bill expanding the authority of police and gendarmerie forces to use firearms. During the main march from the Place de la République to the Place de Bastille, crowds voiced their outrage by chanting “No to permission to kill” and “No to police immunity.” The legislation, which passed the National Assembly in July and awaits Senate review, has sparked widespread public backlash. Supported by over 150 organizations—including Amnesty International—the resistance movement has also submitted a petition with roughly 730,000 signatures to the National Assembly. As the rallies spread to other major cities like Marseille and Lyon, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez instructed security forces to exercise “special caution” while managing the crowds.
