Severe monsoon floods have killed eight people and affected over 545,000 across Thailand, prompting authorities to declare a disaster across 50 districts in Bangkok. With military forces deploying boats and trucks to evacuate residents, the severe weather has also caused major flight disruptions at two of the capital’s international airports. Facing protests over the speed of relief efforts during his tour of flooded neighborhoods, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stressed that “priority is given to those whose lives are in danger.” Following the declaration of a two-day public holiday, city officials warned that draining the inundated capital could take several days even after the heavy rains stop.
