At Least 200,000 Killed During US Invasion in Iraq

The United States military has officially withdrawn from Iraq, concluding a 23-year occupation that began under the premise of dismantling chemical weapons. The initial invasion triggered years of prolonged insurgency and civil war, resulting in a staggering human cost across the country. According to Brown University’s “Costs of War” study and the Iraq Body Count project, direct violence claimed the lives of over 200,000 civilians, with total casualties exceeding 300,000 when combatants are included. Factoring in the collapse of health systems and infrastructure, researchers estimate the true death toll—which includes thousands of children—could be up to four times higher than the direct casualties.
