Evicted 87-Year-Old Spanish Rent Crisis Symbol Dies

Maricarmen Abascal, the 87-year-old woman whose eviction over a massive rent hike triggered Spain’s early elections, has passed away in the hospital. Forced from her home of 70 years by an investment fund, her death prompted thousands to march on parliament chanting, “This is not a death. This is murder.” As unions announce a nationwide general strike for November 11th, her lawyer revealed she tragically died just before signing a new agreement to return to her apartment.
