After a 15-year closure caused by Syria’s civil war, the historic Süleymaniye Complex in Damascus has officially reopened its doors. Designed by the renowned architect Sinan in the 16th century, the masterpiece recently completed extensive restorations that were delayed by the long conflict. Worshippers gathered for the first midday prayer in over a decade, with Imam Abdulrauf al-Sheikh Najib celebrating the community’s return to a site that historically served as “a stopping point for Hajj caravans.” Visitors praised the revitalized madrasahs and gardens, expressing joy that the iconic Syrian landmark has finally been “reunited with the call to prayer.”
