Greeks protest against national healthcare system

Hospital unions, political collectives and organizations held a protest on Saturday morning in Greece’s capital city of Athens. Despite the low temperature, hundreds of people gathered at Syntagma Square located at the center of Athens, demanding the immediate strengthening of the national healthcare system. Protesters chanted, “Health, education, electricity and water are not trading goods, they belongs to the people” slogans, and marched on the streets while carrying banners. Talking about the difficulties in hospitals in the country, the protesters complained about the lack of personnel.

Protesters stated that many patients needed the intensive care unit at the same time, but despite this, the intubated patients were in poor conditions. Protesters said it was difficult for a small number of staff to deal with large numbers of Coronavirus (COVID-19) patients. Emphasizing that the patients other than having COVID-19 couldn’t find a place in hospitals, the protesters stated that most of the patients were sleeping in the hospital corridors.
