death toll rises to 96 in madagascar after cyclone

Death toll rose to 96 after cyclone Batsirai made landfall in Nosy Varika, Madagascar on February 5.  The cyclone slammed into the southern east of the country, where houses were destroyed and damaged. More than 150,000 people have become homeless, and 650,000 others are estimated to be affected by the cyclone, officials have reported. Power outages hit the area as power lines were damaged.

The World Food Program (WFP) distributed food to those staying in the shelters in Manakara and Tamatave. No food and shelter shortage reported in the cyclone-affected regions of the country, where the number of deaths is expected to rise.

Lavrov Signals New Round of Russia-Ukraine Talks

Speaking at the 13th Meeting of High Security Officials in Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that a new round of direct negotiations with Ukraine will be announced shortly. He recalled that Istanbul hosted the first round on May 16 and said Russia will continue to demand the repeal of laws in Ukraine that restrict the Russian language, culture, and the Russian-linked Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Lavrov reiterated that Ukraine’s neutral status remains a key demand in peace efforts.
