flash floods, landslides kill at least 18 in Brazil after heavy rain

Heavy rains caused floods and landslides across the city of Petropolis, located in the mountainous region of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Vehicles were dragged by the flood waters, where the rivers overflowed and flooded the streets and workplaces in the city. More than 180 firefighters and rescue teams rushed to the aid of the stranded as search and rescue efforts were initiated for those affected by the flood. At least 18 people have died due to landslides and floods, the Rio de Janeiro Fire Department stated. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is in Russia for official visit, conveyed his condolences to the families of victims, and stated that he ordered emergency support to those affected by the disaster.

Petropolis received the expected precipitation for the whole of February in less than 6 hours, according to the meteorological service MetSul.
