Death toll rises to 171 in flood disaster in Brazil

Search and rescue efforts are continuing after the flood and landslide disaster caused by heavy rains in the city of Petropolis in the mountainous region of the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian authorities announced that the death toll rose to 171, more than 900 people were placed in shelters, and search and rescue efforts are continuing for 120 people.

The rescue group’s coordinator Roberto Amaral said, “It’s impossible to bring in heavy machinery up here. So we basically have to work like ants, going little by little.” Meanwhile, Mayor Rubens Bomtempo said that the area should be evacuated in order to restructure the city.

On the other hand, Rio de Janeiro state civil defense teams had reported 642 more landslides in the city. The teams had announced that a budget of 150 million Real (39 million 970 thousand dollars) was allocated for the reconstruction of the 5 regions most affected by the disaster.
