Germany faces cooking oil shortage that cannot be supplied from Ukraine. Ukraine, which is an important producer of corn, boll seed and sunflower, exports these products to Europe, especially Germany. While Germany produces only 6 percent of the annual cooking oil it consumes, the rest is imported. Germany, which buys 20-30 thousand tons of sunflower oil from Ukraine every year, is unable to import oil from Ukraine as a result of Russian attacks, which is cited as the primary cause of the oil shortage.
Ali, the operator of the Istanbul market in Berlin, said that there was a shortage of oil in Germany and throughout Europe due to the war in Ukraine. “There is a shortage of sunflower oil and flower oil all over Europe. We try to keep oil for our customers as much as we can. But we are having difficulties. We try to find oil from other suppliers and give it to our customers by going out of the supply chain from which we buy products. We currently have oil, but the prices have increased because we bought it from stockists. Prices have increased by about 30-40 percent. Few weeks of stock available. Our customers are reacting to these price increases, but there is nothing we can do for reasons beyond our control,” Ali said.
