Pakistani police blocks Islamabad roads ahead of planned march of ex-PM Imran Khan supporters

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan called for tens of thousands of his supporters in the northwestern city of Peshawar to gather in the capital, Islamabad, to demand elections. The coalition government led by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif promised to block Khan’s action, describing the rally as an attempt to “divide the country and incite chaos”. “No one should be allowed to besiege the capital and dictate its terms,” said Interior Minister Rana. Entry and exit points on highways leading to the capital have been blocked by police around Peshawar, Lahore and Multan. Islamabad police also announced that intense security measures were taken. Despite all the measures, Khan’s supporters poured into the streets to reach the capital, and at some points clashes broke out between the police and the protesters. Some groups, on the other hand, broke through the barricades and reached the borders of the capital.

Khan and his supporters demand that elections be held this year, not in 2023 as planned.

EU Warns US Tariffs Could Trigger De Facto Trade Ban

0

EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic warned that a proposed 30% US tariff on European goods would effectively amount to a trade ban, severely disrupting transatlantic supply chains.

Speaking ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, Sefcovic expressed disappointment over a letter from US President Donald Trump that halted expected trade progress. “We were close to an agreement,” he said, but now “must prepare for all outcomes.”

The EU has delayed retaliatory measures on $72 billion worth of US goods until August 1, hoping for a negotiated resolution. Sefcovic emphasized that “no one wants a trade war,” while France urged faster preparation for countermeasures and Hungary blamed the EU Commission’s weak response to US pressure.

Danish and Lithuanian ministers echoed calls to avoid escalation but emphasized EU readiness to defend its interests.
