The dragon boat race began Thursday in the Chinese province of Fujian’s coastal city of Xiamen. The race features over 1,000 participants from 41 teams on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. The race is part of a two-day celebration of China’s Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on Friday this year.
The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, which corresponds to late May or early June in the Gregorian calendar.
