The number of dead people has reached 124 in monsoon rains in India and Bangladesh. In the floods in Bangladesh, 36 people were killed. At least 94 percent of Sunamganj, which is home to about 2.5 million people, and 85 percent of Sylhet, which is home to about 4 million people, was submerged. Millions of people living in Sunamganj and Sylhet districts spent the last 4 days on the roof of their homes, without access to drinking water, food and medicines, Bangladeshi officials said.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is seeking $2.5 million in funding to respond to the emergency in Bangladesh. The statement said, “4 million people, 1.6 million of whom are children, were stranded in the flash flood. Urgent help is needed. UNICEF has already sent 400,000 water purification tablets that can provide clean water to 80,000 households for a week.”
The death toll due to floods and landslides in India’s northeastern state of Assam has reached 88. At least 4.8 million people were affected by the flooding in 32 districts of the state. Military, federal and state disaster management officials evacuated more than 231,000 people from low-lying areas and placed them in shelters. The state of Assam saw more precipitation than expected in June, according to the Indian Meteorological Department.
