Spain tackles with ongoing forest fires

Spain began fighting forest fires as summer arrived. Due to wind and land drought, forest fires that started yesterday in Las Hurdes, a city in Caceres in the Extremadura region, have spread to Salamanca province. Hundreds of people were evacuated from the area. The Environment Department of Castile and Leon has declared a level 2 hazard, as fires continue sweeping through the woods.

Extremadura Agriculture Minister Begoa Garca Bernal said that the fire has so far affected 2,500 hectares in Extremadura and 100 hectares in Salamanca. Ministry of Ecological Transition Forest Brigade Workers Association, on the other hand, announced that strong winds worsened the situation and made it difficult to control the fire. The extinguishing efforts underway in the burning areas.
