In the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 400 heavily armed military police carried out an operation against the criminal gangs at Alemao favela. Thousands of people were trapped in their homes for hours during the operation, which claimed the lives of 19 people, including 16 gang members, 2 police officers, and 1 neighborhood resident.
The aim of the operation was to catch the criminals who were planning to raid other slums, authorities said. Some gang members wore uniforms similar to military police, making them difficult to identify, reports stated.
