Greece forest fire nears Turkish border

The forest fire that has been burning in Greece for five days now is spreading along the Türkiye-Greece border line. The flames, which can reach frightening proportions with the effect of the wind, can also be seen from the border villages of Edirne’s Meriç district.

Fatih Uygun, one of the villagers, stated, “Smoke has been covering the sky since the fire started. The fire is being put out on the Greek side, but it flares up again at night. The flames have now reached the Meriç River’s border, and the size of the fire is growing by the day.”

Dadia Forest National Park, where the fire occurred on a bird migration route, is also home to numerous plant and animal species. Furthermore, forest fires have reportedly broken out at 53 locations in Greece in 24 hours.
