The convicts of the Latacunga jail in Ecuador had severe brawl in which guns and knives were involved. 15 killed and 20 people injured. Authorities stated that the fight was related to the groups of local and international drug smugglers. Some of the convicts were caught after attempting to escaping the prison.
316 people were killed in Ecuador’s prisons last year, and 90 this year. It is stated that violence in prisons stems from the lack of a comprehensive policy, poor living conditions and the indifference of the authorities.
