A leak in an oil pipeline owned by Mexican state oil company Pemex, passing through the city of San Juan Guichicovi in Mexican state of Oaxaca, spilled into a river in the city, polluting the 8 kilometers long coastline.
The Mayor of San Juan Guichicovi reported that fresh water sources and most of the grassland areas in the region have been polluted, and that many fish, birds, turtles and wild animals such as badgers have perished.
Authorities consider that the incident might have occurred after a robbery as citizens found various repair tools such as hoses and wrenches in the area where the leak took place.
Fishing is prohibited in the state.
