Hundreds of people staged a protest in Peru to demand the resignation of President Pedro Castillo, who is facing corruption accusations. As demonstrators chanted antigovernmental slogans and marched with flags in the capital, Lima, police used tear gas to suppress the crowd as tension between the demonstrators and the police rose from time to time.
Castillo, who took office in July last year with promises to end the economic crisis, claimed yesterday that he was being the target of incredibly false accusations.
There are currently 5 separate investigations against Castillo, started by the prosecutor’s office.
