5.7 magnitude earthquake hits Italy

According to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) Italy was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 occurred underneath the Pesaro and Urbino offshores in the Marche region at 07:07 local time.

The 7-kilometer-deep earthquake was felt in many cities, including Bologna, Romagna, and Italy’s capital city, Rome, and was followed by aftershocks with magnitudes of 4.0, 3.4, and 3.7.

Authorities have warned that further aftershocks may occur.

There has been no loss of life so far. However, schools in Pesaro and surrounding regions were closed, and the traffic on the railway line that runs down the Adriatic coast through Pesaro was halted.
