Sweden’s Foreign Minister Tobias Billström announced that donations will be held for earthquake victims in Türkiye and Syria before the Foreign Relations Council meeting in Brussels, Belgium. The EU Commission will hold a donors conference in Brussels on 16th of March to collect aid for earthquake victims.

“Our aim is to raise additional support for the people of Türkiye and Syria and try to do as much as possible to alleviate the terrible consequences of this earthquake. We expect a high level of turnout of people for this conference, and we also expect to be able to raise more money to do as much as we can for the people of these countries,” Billström added, stating that Sweden will try its best as well.

Germany Raises Dog Taxes in 2025

Dog taxes across Germany increased in 2025, with some municipalities doubling their rates. In Landshut and Bocholt, taxes jumped from €30–€42 to €60–€84. Cities like Gütersloh now charge up to €120 annually.

The dog tax (Hundesteuer), collected to regulate pet ownership, reached €421 million in 2023. Dangerous breeds face much higher rates—up to €1,660 in Bretten. Guide dogs are tax-exempt.

Dog owners in cities like Berlin, Cologne, and Munich pay between €100 and €176 per year. Second dogs are taxed at higher rates, with some cities charging over €300. Non-payment can result in fines up to €10,000.
