A boat carrying Iranian, Pakistani, and Afghan immigrants sank off the coast of Steccato di Cutro, located in Italy’s Calabria region. The Italian Coast Guard stated that 43 immigrants, including women and , lost their lives and 80 immigrants survived the accident.
Cutro Mayor Antonio Ceraso said that the boat broke up as a result of adverse weather conditions, and the remains of the wreckage were scattered for about 300 meters along the coastline.
Calabria Fire Brigade Spokesperson Danilo Maida stated that firefighters searched the sea with jet skis, but the operation was hindered by adverse weather conditions.
Expressing that he was deeply saddened by the fatal incident, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni vowed to stop irregular sea migration to prevent further deaths at sea.
