Apart from causing the deaths of tens of thousands and collapsing numerous buildings, the earthquakes in Türkiye have also dealt severe damage to many historical buildings. A 659-year-old Turkish-Greek Orthodox Church, which was restored in 2020 in Hatay, is among the important structures that were heavily destroyed.
“Unfortunately, our church could not withstand the severe earthquake and collapsed. When an authorized minister came here on the previous days, we told him that the church was destroyed. He stated that he would support the restoration work. We hope it will be restored as soon as possible and will be ready to be worshipped in,” said Menir Balıkçıoğlu, President of the Greek Orthodox Church Foundation.
