Oldest human genome discovered in southern Spain

Oldest human genome discovered from southern Spain

The earliest human genome has been found in southern Spain by an international research team. The genome belonged to a 23,000-year-old human being who lived during the peak of the last Ice Age, when sea levels were vastly lower than they are now.

It was discovered in the Malalmuerzo cave on the southern Iberian Peninsula. The Malalmuerzo may have served as a shelter from the continent’s harsh temperatures, while Iberian Peninsula was one of the warmest areas of Europe at the time.

“This genome proves the persistence of some lineages on the Iberian Peninsula and shows that this was the only place in Europe where populations withstood the Last Glacial Maximum. The peninsula was their refuge,” said the main author of the study, Carles Lalueza-Fox, who is a geneticist at Spain’s Institute of Evolutionary Biology.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan laid flowers at the Memorial Wall in Kyiv, dedicated to Ukrainian soldiers killed in the ongoing war with Russia.

Fidan arrived in the Ukrainian capital on an official visit and was received by Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha at Freedom Square. His first stop was the Memorial Wall, where he paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the conflict.

As part of his visit, Fidan is scheduled to hold a joint press conference with Sybiha and meet with key Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. He is also expected to hold talks with the Head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, who previously led Ukraine’s delegation in peace talks with Russia held in Istanbul.

Fidan will also meet with representatives of the Crimean Tatar and Gagauz Turkish communities in Ukraine.
