Massive wildfires that began in Saskatchewan have reached Manitoba, prompting evacuation orders for 17,000 residents. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew said evacuees will be sheltered in Winnipeg and nearby cities, with support from the Canadian military following a request approved by Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Flin Flon Mayor George Fontaine confirmed that the town must be evacuated by midnight, with residents using the sole exit route, Highway 10. One firefighter has been seriously injured, and Manitoba has recorded 102 fires this year—far above the seasonal average.
In Alberta, fires have shut down parts of the oil and gas industry. Cenovus Energy reduced staff at its Foster Creek site, while Aspenleaf Energy suspended production in Swan Hills, where 1,600 hectares have burned.
Evacuation orders also remain in place for 1,200 residents in Creighton, Saskatchewan.
