Altıntepe Castle’s Ancient Layers Captured by Drone in Eastern Türkiye
Settled by Urartians and later used in Byzantine and Ottoman eras, Altıntepe Castle in Erzincan’s Üzümlü district has drawn fresh attention after new drone footage showcased its hilltop ruins. Scientific digs begun in 1959 revealed a citadel gate, temple-palace, apadana, storage buildings, and stone tombs, marking Altıntepe as one of the westernmost Urartian centers. Many finds are displayed at the Erzincan Museum, including ceramics, horse tack, metal fittings, and arrowheads. Though excavations are paused, the site remains a key reference point for Anatolian archaeology.
