A dam located at Nova Lima city in Brazil’s Minas Gerais state overflowed due to torrential rain that being effective for days. Also an overflow occurred in the Lisa Dam due to collapse of a dam in the Pau Branco mine, which belongs to the French-owned Vallourec mining company. In the footages released by Brazil Weather and Climate Meteorology, there were moments of the dam couldn’t withstand the waters and overflowed. Local Fire Department official Pedro Aihara told that there were no casualties due to overflowed dam, and there were no flood risk surrounding area. Meanwhile, the BR-40 highway between Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte traffic disruptions occurred, and the highway was closed to traffic in both directions due to the overflowed dam.
On the other hand, due to torrential rains in Minas Gerais since last October, a state of emergency has been declared in 138 settlements and 19 people had lost their lives. 13.723 people were become homeless and 3.372 people have been displaced, according to Civil Defence.
