Air pollution continues affecting Tehran, Iran

Air pollution in Tehran, which ranks 21st among the world’s capitals in terms of air pollution, affects life negatively as it increases every winter season.

Tehran’s air pollution derives from its geographical structure, which is not suitable for air circulation, the dense traffic and population, and the poor quality fuels used in vehicles and factories. According to the Air Quality Control Company, the pollution in Tehran is measured at 147 micrograms/cubic meter today, which is unhealthy and dangerous for all age groups.

The Air Health and Climate Change Head and Ministry of Health of Iran, Dr. Abbas Şahsun extended the previously issued school holiday due to the pollution. Stating that kindergartens and primary schools are also on holiday tomorrow and Tuesday, Şahsun said, “We ask the public, especially the old and sick people, not to go out unless it is necessary.”

While the use of bicycles is encouraged, solutions such as banning old vehicles from traffic, lowering the traffic density, and constructing factories outside the city are implemented by the state.

A research conducted in 27 cities in Iran revealed that 20,800 people lost their lives due to air pollution in the last year, and 6,400 of these deaths were in the capital Tehran.
