The largest prison in the Americas with a capacity of 40 thousand prisoners has been opened in El Salvador. The first 2,000 gang members were transported to the mega prison with shackles on their feet. “This will be their new home, where they can no longer harm the public,” El Salvador President Nayib Bukele said.
Tens of thousands of suspected gangsters have been arrested during theoperations that Bukele gave a start following the rise in murders and other violent crimes. The government stated that the purpose of the mass arrests was to “completely eradicate” the gangs.
Authorities said criminal gangs such as MS-13 and Barrio-18 numbered in the tens of thousands and were responsible for murder, extortion and drug trafficking.
