Ancient Underground City Potential in Kastamonu, Türkiye

In the Taşköprü district of Kastamonu, a hidden canyon featuring city walls, caves, and tunnel entrances is poised for discovery and tourism development. Lecturer Hikmet Haberal from Kastamonu University suggests the canyon may conceal an ancient underground city.

The exploration, led by the Taşköprü Local Action Group Association in partnership with Kastamonu University and Taşköprü Municipality, aims to establish an “adventure route.” The team, including tourism and mountaineering experts, surveyed the Bük Karşı Canyon and uncovered 1.5-kilometer-long wall ruins, a cave with a 100-meter descent, and a waterfall leading to another cave blocked by mud and roots.

The team found signs of ancient life within the caves, bolstering the theory of an underground city. The discovery holds significant potential for tourism, promising to transform the canyon into a major attraction.
